NCVC Launches Plan to Tackle Desertification and Drought

RIYADH: The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) has launched an executive plan to tackle desertification, sand encroachment, and drought as part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing environmental initiatives under its COP16 presidency.

According to a statement by the NCVC, the new plan aims to strengthen national resilience against environmental challenges by developing strategies that align with national policies, regional goals, and international commitments.

The plan emphasizes sustainable natural resource management through comprehensive assessments and the adoption of global best practices.

It includes the development of early warning systems, implementation of mitigation and adaptation strategies, and enhanced coordination among concerned entities.

Key areas of focus include two main components: an executive plan for combating desertification and another for integrated drought management.

The initiative also aims to establish sustainable financing mechanisms and promote the transfer of advanced technologies and knowledge.

In addition to this plan, NCVC continues to rehabilitate degraded lands, protect biodiversity, and manage forests, rangelands, and national parks.

The center is also actively involved in preventing illegal logging and safeguarding Saudi Arabia’s natural resources, in line with its vision to foster environmental sustainability and improve quality of life.
