Kiwi's Open Champions Trophy, Beating Pakistan

Karachi, February 19, 2025 – A packed National Bank Stadium buzzed with anticipation as Pakistan welcomed the return of global cricket after nearly three decades. But the celebrations were short-lived as New Zealand delivered a clinical performance, securing a 60-run victory in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

New Zealand’s dominance with the bat, The game began with early jitters for New Zealand as Pakistan’s bowlers struck early, reducing them to 73 for 3. However, Tom Latham and Will Young steadied the ship, scripting a remarkable recovery.

Young’s elegant 107 and Latham’s unbeaten 118 anchored the innings, frustrating the home crowd and setting the stage for a formidable total. A late flourish from Glenn Phillips (61) propelled New Zealand to an imposing 320 for 5.

Pakistan’s reply started on the back foot as opener Fakhar Zaman was sidelined due to injury. With an already shaky batting lineup, the hosts struggled to build partnerships. Despite valiant efforts from Khushdil Shah (69) and skipper Babar Azam (64), Pakistan’s innings unraveled under relentless pressure from the Kiwi bowlers.

Will O’Rourke (3/47) and Mitchell Santner (3/66) ensured there was no late fightback, bundling Pakistan out for 260.

A tough road ahead for Pakistan, With only three group-stage matches, this defeat puts Pakistan in a precarious position.

Their struggle against New Zealand continues, raising concerns about their form and strategy in the tournament. As they look ahead to their next matches, adjustments will be crucial if they hope to keep their semi-final dreams alive.

For New Zealand, this win not only boosts their confidence but also reaffirms their status as strong contenders in the Champions Trophy.
