Islamabad: In an emergency meeting of Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC), chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government strongly condemned the recent U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities, calling them a violation of international law. The committee affirmed Iran’s right to self-defense under the UN Charter.
The condemnation comes just days after a high-level meeting between Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and U.S. President Donald Trump, and a day after the Pakistani government formally endorsed Trump’s nomination for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in light of his proposed mediation role during recent India-Pakistan tensions.
The NSC, Pakistan's top security consultative forum comprising both civilian and military leadership, met in Islamabad to assess the regional fallout following Israel’s aggressive actions against Iranian nuclear sites.
According to sources from the Prime Minister’s Office the Field Marshal Munir briefed the committee on his discussions with President Trump.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the NSC condemned the Israeli strikes and expressed regret that they occurred at a time when constructive dialogue was reportedly underway between Iran and the United States. The statement warned that such irresponsible actions have escalated tensions, increased the risk of a wider conflict, and undermined diplomatic efforts.
“The NSC reaffirms Iran’s right to self-defense under the UN Charter,” the statement said, adding that the committee extends condolences to the Iranian people for the loss of innocent lives and prays for the swift recovery of the injured.
Reiterating Pakistan’s principled stance, the NSC expressed deep concern over the potential for further escalation following the June 22 attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The committee stated that the strikes were in clear violation of IAEA resolutions, international law, and the UN Charter.
The NSC emphasized that Pakistan remains in close contact with all relevant stakeholders and is committed to contributing to regional peace and stability. It called on all parties to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations, and urged adherence to international human rights and humanitarian law.
Meanwhile, President Trump has intensified his rhetoric against Iran since the Israeli strikes, repeatedly declaring that Iran must never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Iran, for its part, has categorically rejected such accusations, maintaining that its uranium enrichment program is strictly for civilian purposes.
In retaliation, Iran launched missile strikes targeting Israel, injuring dozens in Tel Aviv, further escalating the volatile situation in the region.
