Philippines Asserts Sovereignty Amid China's Claims of External Influence

MANILA: The Philippines has reaffirmed its status as an independent and sovereign nation, rejecting China's suggestion that Manila is acting under the influence of external forces.

In a statement on Monday, the Philippine foreign ministry emphasized that its policies and decisions are based solely on national interest.

The ministry also accused China of disregarding international law, citing Beijing’s "illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive behavior" in the South China Sea, which has impacted Filipino communities.

"We urge all nations to act with caution and avoid rhetoric or actions that could further escalate regional tensions," the statement read.

The response comes after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed on March 7 that the Philippines was not acting independently, but rather following a "script" written by foreign powers to discredit China. The Chinese embassy in Manila has yet to comment on the Philippine government's statement.

In recent months, the Philippines has launched a transparency campaign to highlight China’s activities in the South China Sea. This effort includes allowing journalists to accompany maritime patrols and resupply missions.

Manila's approach has gained support from allies, particularly the United States, which upholds the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The ruling invalidated China's expansive claims in the South China Sea—an outcome that Beijing refuses to recognize.
