London: Just after King Charles wrapped up his first official visit to Canada as Sovereign, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, shared heartbreaking news on social media.
On the same day, the Palace posted a message from King Charles thanking Canadians for their warm welcome; Spencer took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that one of the farmhouses at Althorp House, his family estate, had been destroyed by a fire.
Fortunately, the building was unoccupied at the time. He wrote, “Stunned to learn that one of Althorp House’s farmhouses – fortunately, unoccupied at the time – was burnt down by vandals last night.”
Spencer expressed his sorrow over the incident and thanked @northantsfire for their efforts in handling the blaze. “So very sad that anyone would think this a fun thing to do,” he added. The fire occurred shortly after King Charles and Queen Camilla concluded their two-day visit to Canada.
The monarch had expressed gratitude to Canadians, saying, “It was the warmest of welcomes – and the fondest of returns to a land and a people we love.” The timing of the tragedy added a somber note to an otherwise celebratory royal tour.
