Paris: On Wednesday morning, 28 May 2025, the iconic Fountain of the Innocents in central Paris became the backdrop for a striking visual protest as pro-Palestinian demonstrators dyed its waters blood-red.
The symbolic act, orchestrated by Greenpeace France, Oxfam France, and other NGOs, was intended to “denounce the ongoing massacres in Gaza” and call out what activists described as France’s slow and insufficient response to the humanitarian crisis.
Banners held by protestors around the fountain read: “GAZA: STOP THE BLOODBATH”, “MACRON MUST (FINALLY) ACT”, and “CEASEFIRE”. According to Greenpeace France, the red water represents the bloodshed civilians are enduring in Gaza and is meant to draw public and political attention to the severity of the humanitarian situation.
“This operation aims to denounce France’s slow response to the dire humanitarian emergency facing the people of Gaza today,” Greenpeace stated, urging stronger diplomatic action and humanitarian support.
This demonstration came hours after a joint statement from leaders of France, the UK, and Canada expressed opposition to the expansion of Israel’s military operations. “The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable,” the leaders said, marking one of the most unified condemnations by Western allies in recent weeks.
The protest, though non-violent, disrupted foot traffic and drew large crowds in the area. Videos of the red fountain quickly circulated on social media, igniting global discussion around Western accountability and the symbolic power of protest art.
The demonstration reflects mounting pressure on European leaders to take a more assertive stance amid escalating civilian casualties and growing demands for a ceasefire.
