Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for a proposed 30-day ceasefire but emphasized that certain conditions must be met.
Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Putin stated that any agreement should contribute to lasting peace and address what Russia sees as the root causes of the conflict.
Putin reiterated demands that echo his initial justifications for launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, including Ukraine’s demilitarization and its commitment to a neutral status. He also insisted that Kyiv must halt troop mobilization and military training during the ceasefire period. Furthermore, he questioned whether Ukraine would continue receiving Western military aid over the 30 days, suggesting that such provisions could undermine the ceasefire's purpose.
Another major concern raised by the Russian leader was the ongoing situation in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched a cross-border incursion in August 2024. Putin pointed out that Russian troops had recently reclaimed parts of the region, including the town of Sudzha, and questioned whether a ceasefire would allow Ukrainian forces to withdraw unchallenged despite alleged crimes committed during their presence.
The Ukrainian government, meanwhile, has signaled its willingness to accept the US-brokered ceasefire agreement, provided that Russia fully complies. The deal was discussed in negotiations held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, earlier this week.
As diplomatic efforts continue, US special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Thursday, with reports suggesting he is scheduled to meet Putin. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking after the Jeddah meeting, stated that Washington had formally presented its ceasefire proposal to Russia, saying, “the ball is in their court.”
