Riyadh Art Week Marks Cultural Shift in Saudi’s Creative Scene

RIYADH: Art Week Riyadh is captivating the Saudi capital, with curators and creatives calling it a defining moment in the Kingdom’s cultural evolution, according to the report.

Hosted in the JAX District from April 6 to 13 and organized by the Visual Arts Commission, the event unites local and global artists, curators, and institutions in a vibrant celebration of contemporary art and cross-cultural dialogue.

The event, part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 reform drive, reflects the Kingdom’s rapid transformation into a cultural powerhouse.

Vittoria Matarrese, Director and Curator of Art Week Riyadh, called the event a turning point: “We chose the title ‘At the Edge’ to reflect Riyadh’s position between tradition and modernity, heritage and renewal. This dynamic is reflected in the diversity and dialogue seen throughout the exhibition.”

She noted that Riyadh is becoming a space where modern creativity and deep-rooted tradition converge to inspire new artistic directions.

Public Program Curator Shumon Basar highlighted the deeper conversations behind the event’s theme, “How to Create an Art World: Lessons in Value,” exploring how art generates economic, symbolic, and social value.

“Our aim is to spark conversations about how art helps us understand cultural shifts, not just reflect them,” Basar said.

Art Week Riyadh is emerging as a vital cultural platform that champions experimentation, diversity, and critical reflection on art’s evolving role in society.
