New Delhi: The Indian central government has used more than Rs 400 crores in the last ten years to deal with various court matters, as per official records. In the fiscal year of 2023-24, spending reached Rs 66 crore on legal fees, which is an increase of over Rs 9 crore from the prior year.

According to a report by Law Minister Arjun Ram, the allocation of funds started from the fiscal year of 2014-15, till now large amounts were often spent by the government each year on legal issues except for some drops during COVID-19’s height. The allocation started at Rs 26.64 crore in ’14-’15 and hit Rs37.43 crore by ’15-’16. The latest info shows that the expenditure rose to Rs 66 crore for '23-'24.

The funds associated with legal actions include numerous cases divided  through courts nationwide. The government finds itself involved in about seven lakh ongoing matters; this includes lots brought forth by the Ministry of Finance alone—around two lakh such cases belong directly here. These involve different types including money-related and rule-based arguments.
