RSF Launches Drone Strike Near Port Sudan Airport, Army Confirms

Khartoum: Sudan’s military has confirmed that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out a drone attack targeting a military airbase near Port Sudan Airport on Sunday. The strike marks the first known RSF attack in the eastern city since the conflict began in April 2023.

According to the army, the RSF deployed multiple drones to strike the area, hitting a cargo warehouse, an ammunition depot, and several nearby civilian structures. Initial reports indicate property damage, but no civilian casualties have been confirmed.

The attack came just a day after a fighter jet was showcased during an air force display at the same location, raising questions about whether the display may have been a target.

In a related development, a Sudanese passenger aircraft en route from Dubai was forced to divert to Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport after being unable to land in Port Sudan. Flight tracking data showed the plane circling over the Red Sea before changing course.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has severely affected the country, leading to widespread displacement and extensive damage to infrastructure.
