Rome: Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Member, and Climate Envoy Adel Al-Jubeir led the Saudi delegation at the inauguration ceremony of the new Pope Leo XIV, held on Sunday at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The event marked the formal beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy, with the pontiff presiding over his inaugural Mass in front of a large congregation.
Saudi Ambassador to Italy Prince Faisal bin Sattam was also present at the ceremony.
In his homily, Pope Leo XIV called for the rejection of hatred and division among people and criticized economic systems that exploit the Earth’s resources while marginalizing the poorest populations.
The attendance of Saudi Arabia’s high-ranking officials highlights the kingdom’s commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue, global cooperation, and addressing pressing issues such as environmental sustainability and social justice.
