Saudi Cities Bustle with Nightlife in Ramadan: Experts Urge Balance

RIYADH: With the arrival of Ramadan, the daily rhythm of Saudi cities shifts toward vibrant nightlife, continuing until just before dawn.

Due to fasting from food and drink during daylight hours, businesses extend their operating hours into the evening, leading to bustling markets and lively streets as residents shop and visit loved ones.

Reham Al-Azwari, clinical nutrition track leader at the Makkah Health Cluster, emphasized the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits during Ramadan to enhance productivity despite the altered schedule.

“Healthy nutrition helps improve productivity during the day, even with the change in lifestyle to nighttime,” Al-Azwari said.

However, she warned against the negative health impacts of disrupted sleep patterns and extended late-night hours.

“Staying up late and sleeping during the day can lead to disruptions in the body’s biological clock, affecting focus and productivity. We must practice moderation, ensuring sufficient sleep, especially for those who work during the day,” she added.

Abdulaziz Al-Kaltham, professor of sociology at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, highlighted the social transformation during Ramadan.

“Ramadan rituals reshape social structures as daily activities shift to intensive social interactions,” Al-Kaltham noted.

He pointed out that communal iftar gatherings foster solidarity and bridge social gaps, creating an atmosphere of social justice.

For businesses, the shift in operating hours presents both challenges and opportunities. Dhahi Alwan Al-Barrak, CEO of Zatisto Services, shared his experience of balancing daytime dealings with suppliers and nighttime customer service.

“During Ramadan, we operate under two systems: managing suppliers during the day and welcoming customers at night. This requires extra effort and coordination,” Al-Barrak said.

Despite the challenges, he acknowledged the strengthened bonds among employees who share iftar and suhoor meals, enhancing teamwork and cohesion.

Mansour Al-Osaimi, founder of Right Decision for Customer Experience Consulting, stressed the importance of adapting customer service to match Ramadan’s unique rhythm.

“Companies can enhance customer experience by adjusting working hours to peak times after iftar and offering flexible services such as evening deliveries,” Al-Osaimi said.

He also recommended adopting flexible work hours and remote work options to combat reduced concentration during fasting hours and to boost internal communication.

As Saudi cities embrace the nighttime buzz of Ramadan, experts advise a balanced approach to maintain health, productivity, and social harmony.
