Saudi Launches OceanQuest Foundation to Boost Marine Research

JEDDAH: OceanQuest, a new Saudi nonprofit foundation, was launched in Jeddah on Monday to advance ocean exploration, foster innovation, and promote global cooperation.

Aligned with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the foundation aims to lead deep-ocean discovery, enhance ocean literacy, and raise public awareness.

Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Chairman of OceanQuest, emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing ocean science for humanity’s benefit, showcasing the Kingdom’s ambition to drive innovation and global collaboration.

OceanQuest supports Vision 2030 by investing SR3 billion ($800 million) in ocean research by 2050 and supporting over 150 scientists annually.

It also aims to protect 30% of Saudi Arabia’s marine habitats, bolster biotechnology strategies, and contribute to the Kingdom's decarbonization efforts.

Based at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, OceanQuest focuses on uncovering the ocean's secrets to advance sustainable development and environmental protection.
