Washington: World Pride 2025 was set to begin with a high-energy performance by Grammy-winning artist Shakira, but her appearance was unexpectedly canceled just a day before the event. On Friday, May 30, the Capital Pride Alliance announced that Shakira would no longer perform at Saturday night’s opening concert at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., due to technical challenges connected to her recent Boston tour stop.
Her Thursday night show at Boston’s Fenway Park had already been called off at the last minute, with equipment delays preventing the transport of her full stage setup to D.C. in time.
“Despite every effort to make it happen, it is impossible to move forward as planned,” the Pride Alliance expressed regret over the change.
Although the sudden cancellation disappointed many fans, the overall spirit of Pride remains strong. Organizers confirmed that all other World Pride events across the city will proceed as scheduled. The opening ceremony will be moved to a new location and format, with further details to come.
This year’s World Pride has also drawn political attention. Some international participants have chosen not to attend, citing concerns over potential harassment or in protest of policies from former President Donald Trump’s time in office.
However, domestic support has grown stronger. Local organizers have reported a late increase in hotel bookings and overall interest in the events.
Capital Pride Executive Director Ryan Bos said that robust security measures, including fencing, will be in place for the final weekend’s two-day rally and concert on Pennsylvania Avenue to ensure public safety.
Elliott Ferguson, CEO of Destination D.C., emphasized the surge in community support. “The national community wants to show up,” he said.
