Sharjah: For the first time in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Sharjah has been selected to host the Inclusion International World Congress, one of the most prominent global gatherings focused on the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
The event will take place from September 15 to 17, 2025, at Expo Centre Sharjah under the theme “We Are Inclusion.” Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the congress is expected to draw around 850 participants from over 115 countries across five global regions.
Organized by the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) in collaboration with Inclusion International, and supported by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB) as official media and logistics partner, the congress will bring together people with intellectual disabilities, their families, advocates, and global experts to share experiences and promote greater inclusion.
The three-day event will feature discussions on important issues such as. Inclusive education, Family and community support, Employment opportunities, Healthcare access, Deinstitutionalization, Legal decision-making, Humanitarian services, Social protection and Capacity building for disability-focused organizations
The aim is to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to advocate for themselves and participate in decisions that directly affect their lives. Since its launch in 1963, the congress has championed self-advocacy and influenced inclusive policies worldwide.
Sharjah was chosen as host city due to its inclusive infrastructure, accessibility, and strategic location. SCHS, a longstanding member of Inclusion International, has played a pioneering role in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities in the region.
Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of SCHS, stated: “We are proud that Sharjah is hosting this global event for the first time in the MENA region. It reflects our unwavering commitment to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.”
She added that the congress aligns with Sharjah’s vision of inclusive communities, where people with disabilities are actively involved in shaping policies and decisions.
Sharjah has been internationally recognized as an “Accessible City for the Physically Disabled,” thanks to its well-developed infrastructure, inclusive public spaces, and capacity to host global events. The emirate follows a rights-based approach to empower individuals through access to education, employment, healthcare, and decision-making opportunities.
Sheikha Jameela emphasized that hosting the congress offers a platform to exchange expertise and collaborate on building a more inclusive future for people with intellectual disabilities.
Additionally, Policymakers, advocates, thought leaders, and government officials from across the globe will contribute to shaping recommendations aimed at advancing inclusion on a global scale.
Registration is currently open, with early bird rates available until June 16 via the congress website.
