DUBAI: A volunteer initiative started by Indian expatriates in Dubai a decade ago has evolved into one of the city’s most active community blood donation networks, helping save more than 25,000 lives through over 250 organized drives.
Founded in 2015 by Shihab Theruvath, Anwar Wayanad, and Salam Kanyappady, the Kindness Blood Donation Team was created to raise awareness and simplify the process of donating blood. Leveraging WhatsApp groups to mobilize volunteers by location, the group made it easier for people across Dubai to donate regularly.
Recognizing that busy work schedules often hinder potential donors, the team brought donation campaigns directly to neighborhoods and workplaces. The initiative grew rapidly, drawing volunteers from diverse professions, including designers, receptionists, and service workers, all originally from Kerala, India.
The team played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, running successful campaigns in coordination with the Dubai Blood Donation Centre to help maintain blood supplies amid lockdowns and widespread uncertainty.
With continued support from the Dubai Health Authority and local community groups, the Kindness Team has been recognized for its efforts and urges the public to view blood donation as a routine act of compassion, not just a special occasion.
