New Delhi, April 28, 2025 : Senior Congress leader and former UN diplomat Shashi Tharoor has called for a "visible military response" following the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left at least 26 tourists dead and more than 20 others injured.
Speaking to media on Monday, Tharoor emphasized that a strong and public show of force is necessary.
"Some form of visible military response is unavoidable. The country must respond firmly to such provocations to safeguard its citizens and deter future attacks," he said.
The Pahalgam attack, carried out by five heavily armed militants in the Baisaran Valley tourist area, is being described as the worst terror assault in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Initial investigations have linked the attackers to Pakistan-based extremist groups, further escalating tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad.
In immediate response, the Indian government has taken several tough measures, including:
Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan,
Expulsion of Pakistani diplomats from India,
Closure of key border crossings.
Meanwhile, global condemnation of the attack has been swift.
The United States, United Kingdom, Russia, and several other nations have expressed solidarity with India and called for enhanced international cooperation against terrorism.
India's security forces have also ramped up operations in Kashmir, with a series of combing and search missions underway to track down any remaining suspects.
As India mourns the victims, the nature and scale of the country’s military and diplomatic response will be closely monitored across the world.
Background:
