Nairobi: At least six police officers lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries following an attack on a police camp in Garissa County, eastern Kenya, near the Somalia border. Authorities suspect the assault was carried out by militants linked to Somalia’s al Qaeda-affiliated al Shabaab group.
According to a police report shared with the media, the attack occurred early Sunday morning when armed assailants stormed a camp housing police reservists. The attackers, who were heavily armed, overpowered the camp’s defenses, leading to casualties among the officers.
"So far, six fatalities have been confirmed, while four officers have been injured and are receiving medical treatment," the report stated.
Al Shabaab has a history of launching cross-border attacks in the region, frequently targeting both security forces and civilians. The group has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for years, seeking to topple the government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law.
The attack comes just days after the U.S. Embassy in Kenya issued a travel advisory, warning American citizens against visiting Garissa and other counties bordering Somalia due to the heightened risk of terrorist activities.
