Mumbai: Crazy things concerning fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi have made headlines: this time it is unpaid dues regarding his luxury apartments in Mumbai. Choksi owns three floors in the iconic Gokul Apartments of Malabar Hill and is alleged to owe maintenance fees of a whopping Rs 63 lakh for seven full years.
Maintenance dues accumulated since 2018 when Mehul Choksi fled India amid the Singh Brothers' allegations against him of defrauding Punjab National Bank out of an enormous Rs 13,850 crore, along with his nephew Nirav Modi.
More than the financial burdens that these 9th,10th, and illegally occupied 11-floor terrace properties pose, they are also a potential structural hazard.
A member of the Gokul Apartments society confirmed that the maintenance fees are still outstanding while renovation work on the condominium was ongoing, which cost roughly Rs 30-35 lakh per unit owner.
Since Choksi owns three units, the dues are coming up to about Rs 95 lakh, which are a big burden on the society. Reportedly, big trees have grown on his property and have roots that now threaten the structural integrity of the whole building, thereby have become a nuisance to the other owners in the building.
As the whereabouts of Choksi remain unknown ever since he took to his heels, the Federal Public Service of Justice of Belgium has admitted his arrest on April 12, 2025. Belgium is keeping Choksi detained since India has made a formal request for his extradition.
His woes seem to get worse with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) apparently looking into his matter in India. Residents of Gokul Apartments believe that the law will ultimately get the dues collected and get Choksi back to face justice.
