Colombo: Authorities have ramped up security and traffic operations across Sri Lanka ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations, with over 35,000 police personnel deployed island-wide to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow.
Police announced that heightened security protocols will be in effect at major festive gatherings, including cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions expected to attract large crowds.
In Colombo alone, more than 6,000 officers have been assigned to strategic locations such as Fort, Galle Face, Borella, Kirulapone, and Bambalapitiya, as well as prominent religious sites, to maintain law and order during the holiday period.
A special traffic management plan has also been introduced to address potential congestion in the city, particularly near busy shopping areas.
Authorities are calling on the public to support and cooperate with law enforcement, especially traffic officers, to ensure a safe and orderly festive season.
