Kasur: In a tragic accident near Kharamore on Raiwind Road, a mini-van carrying ten members of the same family plunged into the Rohi drain after the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The incident resulted in the death of eight individuals, while two others sustained severe injuries.
According to reports, the ill-fated family was returning to Bhutta Sohandan in Raiwind after attending a wedding when the accident occurred late Thursday night.
Rescue 1122 officials recovered eight bodies and rescued two critically injured passengers from the submerged vehicle. The deceased have been identified as Khalil, Saleem, Imran, Maqsood, Sohni, Cornelius, Sunny, and Talha. The injured, including driver Shakeel and another passenger, Sajid, were rushed to the DHQ Hospital, where their condition remains critical. All victims were aged between 30 and 40 years.
Authorities have determined that the accident was caused by the driver falling asleep while driving. As a result, the police have registered a case against driver Shakeel, holding him responsible for the tragic incident.
However, local residents gathered at the crash site in large numbers on Friday morning, blaming the administration for negligence. They criticized authorities for failing to install safety barriers or fencing along the 20-foot-deep drain, making the road unsafe for travelers.
Residents also revealed that a bridge had recently been constructed over the drain, but no protective railing had been installed, leading to frequent accidents. They accused officials of endangering lives due to their inaction and lack of proper safety measures.
