WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump assured global fans on Tuesday that they will be welcomed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, promising a “seamless” travel and viewing experience despite concerns over US immigration policies.
Speaking at a White House briefing alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump who chairs the government’s World Cup task force said all agencies would work to ensure safe and successful events across the US, which is co-hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico.
“We can’t wait to welcome soccer fans from around the world,” he said. “Every part of the US government will help make sure fans enjoy a seamless experience.”
Vice President JD Vance emphasized that while visitors are welcome, they will be expected to return home after the event. “We want them to come, celebrate, and enjoy the game. But when time’s up, they’ll need to go home,” he stated.
Infantino voiced FIFA’s full confidence in the US to deliver a successful tournament, saying, “Everyone who wants to enjoy and celebrate the game will be able to do that.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup would serve as a trial run for managing the estimated 2 million overseas visitors.
Trump also expressed confidence in close collaboration with co-hosts Canada and Mexico, downplaying past trade tensions, saying, “We get along very well with both.”
