Tehran: Turkmenistan has expressed a keen interest in boosting its electricity exports to international markets through Iranian territory, according to the country's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov.
Speaking during the 18th meeting of the Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission in Tehran, Meredov highlighted Turkmenistan’s growing energy export potential. He noted that the country already supplies electricity to Türkiye and is actively delivering power to Iran.
Since the beginning of 2025, Turkmenistan has exported approximately 900 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to Iran, Meredov revealed. In 2024, total exports to Iran reached nearly 2 billion kilowatt-hours.
Meredov also underscored the strategic value of the planned 155-kilometer Mary–Mashhad electricity transmission line, which is expected to enhance connectivity between the two nations. He said an Iranian firm won the construction tender for the project two years ago and that financial mechanisms have been proposed to facilitate implementation. One such arrangement includes bartering electricity in return for electrical infrastructure components like transformers.
The four-day economic commission meeting, which opened on May 17 in the Iranian capital, is being co-chaired by Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzaneh Sadegh, and Turkmenistan’s top diplomat, Rashid Meredov. The talks aim to deepen bilateral cooperation across various sectors, with energy trade topping the agenda.
