Dubai: The UAE has introduced a new symbol for its currency, the Dirham, unveiled by the Central Bank on March 28, 2025.
The design is inspired by the UAE’s flag and reflects the nation’s strength, unity, and stability. Two horizontal lines in the symbol represent stability, while elements of the flag—green, white, red, and black—highlight the country’s power and unity. In digital form, the symbol is encircled by a ring that represents security and continuity, mirroring a digital token.
This move is part of broader efforts to enhance the Dirham’s presence on the global stage and improve its identity internationally. Looking ahead, the Central Bank plans to launch a blockchain-based "Digital Dirham" later in 2025, aiming to boost transaction security, speed, and reduce costs.
The new design, influenced by traditional Arabic calligraphy, merges the old with the new, showcasing both elegance and strength. The symbol will be used for both physical and digital versions of the Dirham, supporting the UAE’s commitment to financial innovation and modernization while honoring its heritage.
