ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates has been elected president of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) General Assembly for the first time, marking a significant diplomatic achievement.
The UAE also secured a seat on the Executive Board, sharing the presidency with Malaysia following a competitive election held during the Assembly's session in Nairobi, Kenya.
The election underscores the UAE’s growing international stature and its contributions to sustainable urban development and global housing initiatives, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The UN-Habitat General Assembly, comprising 193 member states, is the program’s top decision-making body, tasked with formulating global policies to improve urban living conditions and promote inclusive cities.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, described the achievement as a reflection of the UAE’s strategic efforts and leadership vision in developing sustainable housing and urban environments.
“This recognition highlights the UAE’s commitment to ensuring quality of life through an integrated housing model and sustainable urban development,” he said.
Al Mazrouei cited the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme as a key contributor to the country’s success. Since its launch in 1999, the program has provided innovative and sustainable housing solutions, enhancing family stability and meeting national housing demands.
He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to advancing Goal 11 of the SDGs, making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing urban challenges such as rapid growth and climate change.
Eng. Mohamed Al Mansouri, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, noted the achievement reflects the UAE’s leadership in smart, sustainable urban planning. He praised the efforts of the national team and diplomatic corps for their role in securing international support for the UAE’s candidacy.
The UAE plans to use its leadership role to strengthen international partnerships, exchange best practices, and further contribute to global housing and urban development initiatives.
