UAE Unveils World's First Jet-Powered Firefighting Drone ‘Suhail’ at Expo 2025

Abu Dhabi: In a landmark step toward revolutionizing emergency response, the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority unveiled Suhail, the world’s first jet-powered firefighting drone, at the UAE Pavilion during Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.

Designed and developed in the UAE, Suhail is equipped with a jet propulsion engine and advanced smart systems that enable vertical take-off, precise navigation, and performance in extreme conditions.

The drone can reach hazardous or inaccessible areas, enhancing the efficiency and safety of firefighting missions.

“This drone marks a turning point in how we approach fire emergencies,” said Brig. Gen. Salem Abdullah bin Barak Al Dhaheri, Director General of the Authority. “It reflects our commitment to innovation and public safety, backed by strong leadership support.”

Equipped with computer vision and a LiDAR-based 3D scanning system, Suhail operates autonomously even in GPS-denied environments such as dense urban areas and enclosed structures. It provides critical aerial support where ground teams face delays or access challenges.

Maj. Eng. Ali Hassan Al Madfaei, Project Director for Autonomous Systems, said the concept arose from real-world needs. “We needed a solution that improves efficiency while keeping our crews safe,” he noted.

Built to handle the recoil of aerial firefighting, the drone features a stabilized water cannon and AI-powered autonomous navigation. It’s tailored for use in high-rise buildings, industrial zones, and complex fire scenarios.

The launch highlights Abu Dhabi’s leadership in next-gen emergency tech and underscores the UAE’s growing role in shaping global standards in disaster management and urban safety.

“This innovation shows our vision for a safer, smarter future,” added Brig. Gen. Al Dhaheri.
