UK Women Sue Johnson & Johnson Over Alleged Asbestos Exposure in Talcum Powder

In a significant legal development, women in the UK have filed a lawsuit against US pharmaceutical and cosmetics giant Johnson & Johnson, alleging that they developed cancer after being exposed to asbestos in the company’s talcum powder. The legal action marks the first time J&J faces court proceedings in the UK over these allegations, having already dealt with similar lawsuits in North America.

The law firm KP Law, which represents about 2,000 claimants, claims that women diagnosed with life-changing and life-limiting cancers were exposed to asbestos in J&J's talcum powder products. This legal challenge is part of a broader controversy surrounding the company, which has faced years of scrutiny over the safety of its talc-based products.

In response, Erik Haas, J&J’s worldwide vice president of litigation, emphasized that the company takes talc safety "incredibly seriously." Haas further stated that J&J’s internal analysis found no evidence of asbestos contamination in its talcum powder, and independent scientific studies have concluded that talc is not linked to the risk of ovarian cancer or mesothelioma.
