UNESCO Hails India as Srimad Bhagavad Gita & Natya Shastra Enter Memory of the World Register; Praises WAVES 2025 Summit

New Delhi, May 4, 2025 — In a proud moment for India’s rich civilizational heritage, the UNESCO World Heritage Director, Lazare Eloundou, has formally congratulated India on the inscription of two iconic texts — the ‘Srimad Bhagavad Gita’ and Bharata Muni’s ‘Natya Shastra’ — into the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

This recognition marks global acknowledgment of India’s unparalleled contributions to philosophy, performing arts, and ancient knowledge systems.

In a statement, Director Eloundou lauded India's efforts in preserving and promoting its intellectual and cultural legacy. “The Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Natya Shastra represent profound wisdom, creativity, and human values. Their inclusion in the Memory of the World Register is a tribute not only to India’s history but to humanity’s shared heritage,” he said.

The announcement comes as India prepares to host WAVES 2025 (World Association for Vedic Studies Summit) — a major international event that brings together scholars, thinkers, and policymakers to discuss Vedic knowledge systems and their contemporary relevance. Eloundou also commended India for organizing the summit, calling it a timely initiative that bridges tradition with global dialogue.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita, a sacred dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, is revered as a spiritual and philosophical cornerstone across the world. Natya Shastra, authored by sage Bharata Muni, is one of the world’s earliest treatises on dramaturgy and performing arts, forming the foundation of Indian classical dance, music, and theatre.

The inclusion of these texts in the UNESCO register affirms their universal significance and ensures their preservation for future generations.
