Gaza: More than 75% of households in Gaza are experiencing reduced access to clean water, according to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), as deteriorating sanitation conditions raise urgent public health concerns. The crisis has worsened over the past month, driven by continued Israeli bombardments and a total blockade that has crippled essential infrastructure.
In a statement posted on social media on May 14, 2025, UNRWA said it currently operates five water wells across Gaza and is actively working to repair damaged facilities using recycled and salvaged parts. The agency credited local community support for enabling field teams to continue limited water distribution and repairs under increasingly dangerous conditions.
The ongoing blockade has severely limited the import of fuel, equipment, and water purification supplies—leaving hundreds of thousands without reliable access to clean water. With sanitation systems also failing, humanitarian groups warn of the growing risk of waterborne diseases.
UNRWA's appeal highlights the urgent need for international action to restore access to basic services in Gaza and prevent further deterioration of living conditions for over two million residents trapped under siege.
