U.S. Announces Capture of Kabul Airport Bombing Mastermind

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, March 4, that the individual responsible for orchestrating the deadly suicide bombing at Kabul Airport in August 2021 has been captured.

During his address to Congress, Trump did not specify when or where the suspect was apprehended but expressed gratitude to the Pakistani government for its assistance in the capture.

"I am pleased to announce tonight the capture of the terrorist who was the main culprit behind the brutal attack at [Kabul Airport]. He is now on his way here to face America’s swift justice. I thank the government of Pakistan for their help in this operation," Trump stated.

The suicide bombing, claimed by the Islamic State’s Khorasan branch (ISIS-K), resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and at least 170 Afghan civilians.

For the first time, the U.S. military has publicly identified the bomber as Abdul Rahman Logari, a member of ISIS who had been released from prison by the Taliban after their takeover of Kabul.

Despite Trump's repeated criticism of President Joe Biden over the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, U.S. Central Command has previously stated that preventing the attack was not possible at the time.
