Uzbekistan and Afghanistan Boost Bilateral Ties, Focus on Trans-Afghan Railway Project

Tashkent: Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi held a telephone conversation, underscoring their mutual commitment to strengthening the longstanding neighborly relations between their two countries.

During the call, both sides praised the progress made in their growing partnership and emphasized the vast opportunities that still exist to expand cooperation.

Special attention was given to the strategic Trans-Afghan Railway project, which aims to enhance regional transportation links and promote broader economic integration across Central and South Asia.

In a statement on the X platform, Saidov highlighted the importance of this initiative in tapping into the full potential of the wider region and reinforcing economic connectivity.

The ministers also agreed to continue working closely to support sustainable development, foster regional stability, and promote lasting peace.

Meanwhile, economic ties between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan have shown remarkable growth. Official statistics reveal that bilateral trade reached $276.2 million between January and February 2025 — a significant increase of 110.5% compared to the same period in 2024, when trade volume stood at $131.2 millions.
