Kyyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Tuesday that his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office did not go as expected, calling the outcome unfortunate.
In a statement posted on X, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to peace and its willingness to engage in negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.
“Ukraine is fully prepared to sit at the negotiating table to bring a lasting peace closer,” Zelensky stated. “Nobody desires peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I are ready to cooperate under President Trump’s leadership to achieve a stable resolution.”
Reflecting on his visit to Washington last Friday, Zelensky expressed regret over how the meeting unfolded. “It was not the outcome we had anticipated,” he said. “We hope to move forward with constructive dialogue and cooperation in the future.”
Zelensky also addressed a planned agreement on Ukraine’s mineral resources, which was set to be signed during his visit but was derailed following the troubled discussions at the White House. Despite the setback, he reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to finalize the deal.
His vision for a peace agreement aligns with the proposals discussed at a recent summit of Western leaders led by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Zelensky further acknowledged the crucial role the United States has played in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, particularly highlighting Trump’s decision to supply Javelin missiles during his previous administration. “We are grateful for that pivotal moment in our defense,” he said.
