Kyyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced his readiness to engage in direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Türkiye this week, aiming to resolve the ongoing conflict between the two nations. Zelenskyy declared that he would be present for negotiations on Thursday, while calling for a ceasefire to take effect from Monday.
The announcement followed a proposal by Putin, who suggested holding peace talks in Türkiye to address the "root causes" of the conflict. The Russian leader indicated that a ceasefire could be discussed during the talks but stressed the need for a "lasting peace" rather than a temporary truce allowing Ukraine to rearm.
The United States entered the diplomatic fray, with President Donald Trump publicly urging Ukraine to accept Russia’s offer without delay. Posting on Truth Social, Trump voiced skepticism over Ukraine’s commitment to peace, stating, "Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also been active in facilitating diplomacy, holding discussions with both Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron. Erdoğan’s office confirmed that Russia had proposed Thursday for direct negotiations, though it remains uncertain whether Putin will attend in person.
European leaders have expressed caution over Russia’s intentions. French President Macron labeled Putin’s proposal as a "first step" but warned it may be a tactic to buy time. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk collectively called for an immediate 30-day ceasefire.
Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, emphasized that the conflict has broader global implications, warning that its outcome will impact the future of democracy in the region. He also accused Russia of human rights violations and warned of ongoing attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Russia currently controls around 20% of Ukrainian territory, according to Kyiv’s estimates, and continues to face widespread condemnation for its actions. Despite Zelensky’s willingness to engage in talks, skepticism remains over whether both genuinely seeks a peaceful resolution.
