Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reaffirmed Australia's commitment to a two-state solution in the Middle East, following former U.S. President Donald Trump's call for the United States to take control of Gaza.

During a visit to the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported Trump's proposal for the U.S. to take possession of Gaza and oversee its redevelopment. However, Albanese made it clear that Australia's stance remains unchanged.

"Australia's position is the same as it was this morning, last year, and even a decade ago. Our government, on a bipartisan basis, continues to support a two-state solution," Albanese stated in Canberra.

He also confirmed that Australia has not been approached to assist with Gaza's reconstruction efforts following the ceasefire.

Trump’s remarks come shortly after the U.S. withdrew funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides aid to Palestinian refugees.

Opposition assistant spokesman for foreign affairs, Julian Leeser, reiterated the coalition’s support for a negotiated two-state solution, distancing Australia from Trump’s proposal.

Meanwhile, Greens leader Adam Bandt strongly condemned Trump's statements, warning that such actions could undermine international law.

"This is a call for the takeover of another country, possibly by force. Australia must not follow the U.S. blindly into conflicts," Bandt urged.

The Albanese government has yet to make any formal response to the U.S. proposal beyond reaffirming its existing foreign policy.
