CANBERRA — A new bill has been introduced in the Australian Parliament, aiming to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. The proposed legislation mandates that social media companies take reasonable steps to prevent minors from creating accounts, or face fines of up to $32.5 million USD.

The ban would apply to popular platforms like TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Snapchat, among others. If the bill is passed, the law is expected to come into effect within a year, marking a significant move by Australia to safeguard children from potential risks associated with social media use.
