UAE, DUBAI—Doctors in the UAE are raising concerns about the early arrival of flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections this year. With symptoms lingering longer than usual, medical professionals are urging residents to stay vigilant.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar Gupta, an internal medicine specialist at Burjeel Specialty Hospital in Sharjah, noted that both flu and RSV viruses have been more active this season, partly due to global weather variations. He explained that factors such as changes in immunity, poor hydration, lack of sleep, allergies, and stress are contributing to increased illness. "More people are falling sick because of these factors," Dr. Gupta said.
Compounded infections, including both influenza A and B alongside atypical bacterial infections like Mycoplasma pneumonia, are causing longer recovery times, sometimes extending up to a month. "Viral infections are now lasting longer due to frequent exposure in social settings, immune status, and age, especially for those with co-morbidities," Dr. Gupta explained.
In Dubai, Dr. Mohamed Rafique, consultant pulmonologist at Prime Hospital, emphasized the rise of RSV cases affecting both children and adults. He also warned of post-viral bronchial hyper-reactivity, a condition that mimics asthma, causing persistent coughing and wheezing. This condition can worsen underlying issues such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
To stay protected, doctors recommend:
- Getting the flu vaccination
- Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise
- Hydrating and getting adequate sleep
- Practicing good hygiene like wearing masks and covering the mouth while sneezing
- Avoiding close contact with sick individuals and staying home when ill
On the other hand, avoid touching or hugging sick people, sharing food, and consuming alcohol or smoking.
