Germany, France, UK Offer Urgent Nuclear Talks Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Crisis

Berlin: In a diplomatic push to defuse one of the most dangerous standoffs in recent Middle East history, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have extended an immediate offer to Iran to restart negotiations over its nuclear programme. The move comes as Israel and Iran continue trading attacks, raising fears of a full-scale regional war.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, currently on a high-stakes visit to the Middle East, told German public broadcaster ARD that efforts are underway to prevent further escalation. “Germany together with France and Britain are ready. We’re offering Iran immediate negotiations about the nuclear programme. I hope [the offer] is accepted,” Wadephul said, signaling Europe’s growing concern over the deteriorating security landscape.

The proposal is seen as an urgent attempt to restore diplomatic channels that have been largely dormant since the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). In recent weeks, Iran’s backing of attacks against Israel and its intensified missile development have alarmed both European governments and neighboring states, prompting renewed calls for containment and transparency.

Wadephul emphasized that meaningful dialogue on the nuclear issue is not only crucial for regional peace but also vital for European security. “This is a key prerequisite for pacifying the conflict—that Iran poses no threat to the region, to the state of Israel, or to Europe,” he added. The remarks highlight growing fears that the conflict could spill beyond the Middle East, drawing in global actors and destabilizing international relations.

So far, Tehran has not publicly responded to the European proposal. But with tensions surging and both Iran and Israel exchanging deadly strikes, pressure is mounting on all parties to step back from the brink. Whether diplomacy can regain its footing amid such high stakes remains to be seen—but for now, the door to negotiation has been opened.
