Jerusalem/Beirut: Israel is poised to approve a ceasefire plan proposed by the US, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The security cabinet, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to convene later today to discuss and approve the ceasefire, which has already garnered support from European officials. The US and France have been at the forefront of efforts to broker peace, with both sides now nearing an agreement. Despite this, Israel has warned that security concerns remain, especially regarding Hezbollah’s military presence in Lebanon. The plan involves a 60-day transition period, during which Israeli forces would withdraw and Lebanese forces would redeploy. A US-led committee will oversee the implementation of the truce, though Israel has reserved the right to act against imminent threats. The conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives, erupted in the wake of Hezbollah’s support for Hamas following the attack on Israel in October 2023.
