Manchester United Miss £15m Transfer Chance for Goalkeeper Mike Maignan

Manchester: Manchester United may have missed a golden opportunity in the transfer market. As they aim to rebuild under Ruben Amorim after their worst-ever Premier League finish, United targets several key positions.

Their lack of goals last season has pushed them to prioritize signing a new forward. They have already secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are pursuing Bryan Mbeumo. Both players combined for 37 goals this season. Additionally, United plans to strengthen the midfield and wing-back positions.

However, many fans feel reinforcing the goalkeeping department should also be a priority. Current goalkeeper Andre Onana, signed for £47 million from Inter Milan in 2023, has struggled with consistency.

Despite a strong start, recent mistakes have raised concerns about his long-term suitability.

Meanwhile, reports from Italy suggest Chelsea are close to signing AC Milan’s Mike Maignan for £18 million. The 29-year-old has established himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, winning league titles in France and Italy. Former United forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic even praised his strong mentality.

As a young PSG goalkeeper, Maignan stood up to Ibrahimovic during a training session. Reflecting on the moment, Maignan said, “He told me: ‘You’re a sht goalkeeper.’ The next time, I stopped his shot and responded: ‘You’re a sht attacker.’ Later, he told me he liked my personality.”

Maignan is now France’s number one and is available at a discounted price. His contract expires next season, so Chelsea’s pursuit of him highlights an opportunity United may regret passing on.
