Ahmedabad/Surat, April 27, 2025 : In the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat Police have launched a sweeping operation targeting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants across the state.
As part of the crackdown, 890 individuals were detained in Ahmedabad and another 134 in Surat, police officials confirmed on Sunday. Authorities stated that the operation was aimed at identifying and removing illegal residents who could pose potential security threats following heightened intelligence alerts.
Notably, four of those detained are under special scrutiny after preliminary investigations suggested possible links to criminal networks, including suspected connections to the terrorist organization al-Qaida. Senior police officials indicated that these individuals are currently undergoing intensive interrogation, and further investigations are underway.
The operation, described as one of the largest of its kind in recent years, involved coordinated raids across multiple residential and industrial areas. Police teams acted on intelligence inputs that warned of potential sleeper cells exploiting migrant communities as cover.
Gujarat’s Home Department has issued a statement emphasizing the state's "zero tolerance" policy toward illegal immigration, especially in the wake of security incidents elsewhere in the country.
Security has also been tightened across major urban centers, with increased verification drives in sensitive zones.
More updates are expected as investigations continue.
