At least six people were injured in a shooting attack at a checkpoint in the Israeli-occupied West Bank early Tuesday morning, according to the Israeli military and local hospitals. The Israeli military reported that an assailant opened fire on soldiers at a checkpoint in the village of Tayasir, located in the northern West Bank. Soldiers returned fire during the confrontation, killing the attacker.
Israeli hospitals confirmed receiving six individuals injured in the attack. Local media reported that the injured included soldiers, with at least two in critical condition. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad militant group praised the attack but did not claim responsibility for it.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region. Over the past few weeks, Israel has conducted extensive military operations in nearby Jenin, targeting what it describes as militant activity. These operations, involving soldiers and armored bulldozers, have caused significant damage and destroyed numerous homes.
Palestinian health officials have not provided a comprehensive death toll but stated that at least 20 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the raids began. The West Bank has experienced a sharp increase in violence since Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack from the Gaza Strip, which escalated into a full-scale war.
This latest attack underscores the ongoing volatility in the region as tensions between Israeli forces and Palestinian groups continue to rise.
