Restless Nights: Kidney Disease’s Hidden Link to Leg Discomfort

Washington: A new study has found a strong connection between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). This neurological condition disrupts sleep and affects quality of life.

The findings show that nearly one in four CKD patients—especially those on dialysis—suffer from RLS symptoms, primarily driven by iron deficiency. This shortage stems from poor iron absorption, chronic inflammation, and blood loss during dialysis.

RLS causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, especially at night, with temporary relief through movement. The study also noted lower serum iron, ferritin, and transferrin saturation levels in affected patients.

Researchers emphasize that early detection and management of iron levels can ease symptoms. Treatments include iron supplements, lifestyle changes, and techniques such as warm baths or leg massages. Experts urge routine screening for RLS in CKD patients to improve sleep and overall well-being.
