Rising Cases of Cervical Spondylitis Among Youth Linked to Modern Lifestyles

Hoshiarpur: The rising cases of cervical spondylitis, particularly among the youth, have become a growing concern for health professionals. This condition, which affects the neck and upper spine, was traditionally observed in older adults but is now increasingly being diagnosed in younger individuals, including students.

Dr. Sanjay Narad, an orthopaedic specialist from Hoshiarpur, has reported a significant surge in young patients suffering from cervical spondylitis. He considers this trend alarming as it highlights the adverse effects of modern lifestyle habits on youth health.

Cervical spondylitis, which is a degenerative condition, cannot be fully cured but can be managed effectively with early detection and lifestyle modifications. The primary cause of the increase in this condition among young people is the excessive and improper use of mobile phones and laptops. Prolonged hours of screen time, especially while looking down at devices, put continuous strain on the neck, leading to "text neck" — a condition that results from poor posture. This can damage the cervical spine over time, causing pain and stiffness.

Another factor contributing to the rise of cervical spondylitis is the popularity of workout routines among young people. Incorrect exercise techniques, such as lifting heavy weights without supervision or neglecting warm-ups, can lead to neck and back muscle strain, triggering or worsening the condition. Moreover, the modern sedentary lifestyle, which involves long hours of sitting without adequate physical movement, also contributes significantly to spinal health issues.

Dr. Narad explained the common symptoms of cervical spondylitis, which include neck pain, stiffness, headaches at the base of the skull, tingling or numbness in the hands, and pain radiating to the shoulders or arms. Additional symptoms, such as vertigo or loss of balance, may also occur. It is crucial to seek medical advice if these symptoms persist, as ignoring them can worsen the condition over time.

While cervical spondylitis cannot be completely cured due to its degenerative nature, Dr. Narad emphasized that the condition can be well-managed with timely intervention. He advised that exercise, including regular neck and shoulder stretches, strengthening back muscles, and correcting posture, plays a key role in both prevention and management. Yoga, he suggested, is also beneficial for improving flexibility and relieving neck tension. Additionally, he cautioned young individuals to avoid high-intensity workouts without warming up and to seek professional guidance when exercising.
