Riyadh: The Year of the Camel 2024 initiative, a project spearheaded by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Culture, has made its presence felt at the Saudi International Handicrafts Week (Banan) Exhibition in Riyadh. The pavilion at the event provides visitors with an educational exploration of camels, celebrating their deep-rooted connection to Saudi culture and history. The display features panels and a multimedia screen detailing the significance of camels in the Kingdom, including prominent rock engravings from across Saudi Arabia. These ancient engravings highlight the camel's importance dating back to pre-Islamic times, through the early Islamic period, and into modern history.

Additionally, the pavilion showcases traditional camel-related crafts, such as the "shaddad" — a wooden seat placed on a camel's hump — and the "khirj," a pair of bags hung from the shaddad to carry the rider’s belongings. These items reflect the skilled craftsmanship that has evolved around camels over the centuries. This participation at the Banan exhibition is a key part of the Year of the Camel initiative, which aims to raise awareness and celebrate camels as a symbol of pride for the Saudi people. The initiative also aims to promote the cultural and civilizational significance of camels both locally and internationally throughout 2024.
