New York: During a ceremony held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Amina J. Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, read a letter from UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In his letter, Guterres expressed that this year's commemoration is especially painful as the fundamental goals of peace are now more distant than ever.

The letter highlighted the devastating impact of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, which have left the area in ruins, resulting in the deaths of over 43,000 civilians, most of them women and children. Guterres condemned the worsening humanitarian crisis, describing it as growing increasingly dire and unforgivable. He also stressed the urgent need for a return to the two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living in peace and security, and Jerusalem serving as the shared capital. The letter condemned Israel's continued airstrikes, settlement expansion, evictions, and violence from settlers in the occupied West Bank, which are intensifying the suffering of Palestinians. Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations' firm support for the rights of the Palestinian people to live in peace and dignity and called for immediate humanitarian assistance to alleviate the crisis.
