US praises Dr Yunus's efforts on Rohingya crisis

DHAKA: The United States has praised Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, for his strategic and inclusive approach towards resolving the Rohingya conundrum.

During a high-level meeting held at state guesthouse Jamuna on Thursday, US Deputy Assistant Secretaries Nicole Ann Chulick and Andrew R. Herrup appreciated Dr Yunus's perspective in looking at the Rohingya as an issue in spice with other pressing internal problems in Myanmar rather than just as a stand-alone problem.

Sincere appreciation was also extended to the people of the United States for the continued generosity of Bangladesh in allowing over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees to take shelter in this country and for the peaceful and humanitarian progress boosted through the direction of the leadership of Dr Yunus. National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman from Bangladesh and Mission Head Tracey Ann Jacobson from the USA also met at the venue.

Dr Yunus said the recent announcement of Myanmar to allow 180,000 Rohingyas to go back into Rakhine was a key event and welcomed the US aid restoration to the Rohingyas. He further thanked President Donald Trump for the decision to hold for 90 days reciprocal tariffs to create a window for economic cooperation.

On the agenda were also a number of other subjects including peace and security in the region and connectivity. Dr Yunus also reassured everyone that the relations between Bangladesh and the US would also continue to strengthen on all fronts and that the interim government was open to discuss areas of mutual interest with the Trump administration.

The visit of the US delegation itself will keep proving how internationally the leadership of Bangladesh stands at the crossroads of one of the world's gravest humanitarian crises and becomes a beacon of hope for the future, signaling solution through diplomacy and multilateral initiatives.
