Islamabad: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has embarked on initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Pakistan. As part of its efforts, the bank has launched pilot studies in Sheikhupura and Okara to enhance water usage efficiency and trial alternative methods for wetting and drying land.

According to an ADB report, the water conservation pilot project is expected to significantly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative also aims to support rice farmers in safeguarding their crops against the adverse effects of climate change.

The ADB emphasizes that farmers need to adopt alternative practices for better water management. These practices are crucial for not only improving agricultural productivity but also for mitigating environmental impacts associated with traditional farming methods.

The pilot projects will involve training sessions for farmers, introducing them to innovative irrigation techniques and sustainable farming practices. By optimizing water use, the projects aim to enhance crop resilience, particularly for rice, which is a staple food and a critical crop for Pakistan's economy.

As the country grapples with the challenges posed by climate change, these initiatives by the ADB represent a proactive approach to addressing environmental issues while promoting sustainable agricultural development. The bank's efforts are expected to pave the way for broader implementation of water-saving technologies and practices across the region.
