MEXICO: Mexican boxing star Canelo Alvarez has claimed he was only “50%” fit due to injuries during his 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol, reigniting talk of a potential rematch with the Russian light heavyweight champion in 2026.
Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) told Ring Magazine that injuries to his hand and knee significantly hampered his preparation, preventing him from sparring or running ahead of the bout.
“I had 50% of my abilities,” said Alvarez, adding that he “couldn’t throw, couldn’t run,” during training camp.
Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs) handed Alvarez a decisive defeat by unanimous decision in May 2022, in a performance many saw as one-sided despite the narrow official scores.
The loss remains a rare blemish on Canelo’s decorated career.
While Alvarez says he is motivated to “show he’s a better fighter,” critics have questioned the timing of the injury revelation.
Some suggest the comments are an attempt to generate hype and justify a rematch that fans may view with skepticism.
“If Canelo wanted a rematch, why wait until 2026?” asked observers, speculating whether Alvarez hopes to capitalize on Saudi interest in hosting mega-fights, or possibly face an aging Bivol.
With upcoming bouts scheduled against William Scull on May 3 and Terence Crawford on September 13, the outcome of those fights could determine public interest in a second Bivol showdown.
Despite the criticism, Alvarez acknowledged Bivol’s skill: “He’s a very good fighter, one of the best out there,” he said.
The potential rematch, if confirmed, would mark Canelo’s return to the 175-pound division but questions remain about the motivations and timing behind the callout.
