Government to Celebrate ‘Day of Development and Progress’ on Feb 8

ISLAMABAD: The Minister for Information, Broadcasting, National Heritage, and Culture, Attaullah Tarar, announced on Monday that the government would commemorate February 8 as the ‘Day of Development and Progress’ (Youm-i-Tameer-o-Taraqi). This marks the completion of the government’s first year in power under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.

Speaking to the media after attending the final match of the Media Cricket League, Mr. Tarar said the day would celebrate the government’s numerous milestones, including achievements in economic growth. He highlighted that initiatives by the government had restored the confidence of international institutions and that the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting was successfully held in Pakistan after 27 years.

Awards will also be conferred on February 8 to individuals who have made notable contributions in the past year.

On the topic of political stability, Mr. Tarar underlined the importance of ongoing negotiations with the opposition party, expressing optimism for positive outcomes.

The minister addressed concerns regarding financial constraints at Pakistan Television (PTV), denying such claims and pledging to revive its former glory. He added that private sector anchors had been hired, and talk shows now include representatives from all political parties to ensure balanced discussions.

Mr. Tarar also emphasized the importance of promoting sportsmanship and ethical values. Referring to the successes of the Pakistan cricket team, he said these victories reflected the government’s commitment to promoting sports.

Looking ahead, he announced that Pakistan would host the International Champions Trophy after a significant gap, restoring the cricketing spirit in the country and providing fans an opportunity to witness international players in action.

He praised the efforts of Interior Minister and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in successfully negotiating with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to bring the tournament to Pakistan.

“This is a step forward in promoting cricket and enhancing Pakistan’s reputation on the global stage,” Mr. Tarar concluded.
