Lisbon: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, speaking to the media in Portugal, confirmed that he is attending the 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Araqchi emphasized that while Iran reserves the right to retaliate against Israeli airstrikes from last month, the country is also evaluating other regional developments, including the recent ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel. Araqchi welcomed the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire and expressed hope that it would lead to a long-lasting peace agreement. He also highlighted the shifting dynamics in the region, particularly Israel’s acknowledgment of a potential ceasefire in Gaza following pressure from international actors. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had previously indicated that conditions for a ceasefire in Gaza were improving, particularly in light of ongoing efforts to release Israeli hostages. This follows US President Joe Biden’s renewed push for a successful ceasefire deal after several failed attempts. The ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel has been seen by some, including General Salami of Iran, as a significant defeat for Israel.
